About Michelle McEwen
Like a lot of things in my life; I became a Doula by accident. When I was in my late 20's my Dad and his wife were expecting their first child. My Dad is hypoglycaemic and I was concerned that he would get so busy supporting his wife that he would forget to take care of himself and eat. So I asked if I could come with them to the hospital to help out, they agreed that would be a good idea.
They called me as they headed off to the hospital at 1 a.m. Well, I am sure that those 24 hours changed my life. I didn't really know anything about birth but I was struck with the amazing notion that Women have been helping Women have babies since the beginning of time!
That was in 1998-I have learned a lot about birth since then and I am sure that I will continue to learn from the families I meet and the Calgary birthing community. As a doula I feel completely alive supporting families when their babies are on the way. When I get my turn to snuggle a new baby, I whisper into their ear, "Welcome to the spinning world, we're so glad you have come!" I have borrowed that sentiment from that book On the Day You Were Born, by Debra Frasier.
I am a 'born and raised' Calgary girl. I am married to a wonderful man and I am the proud mother of two girls, a ten year old "bonus" daughter-and a five year old who I gave birth to at home. I was supported by my husband, my Mom, a spectacular Doula and the Briar Hill Midwives.
About Sheri MacLaren
I was first invited to a birth in 1998. I was both awed and honoured by the experience, and that feeling persists as I work as a birth Doula. I have been with Earthy Birthy Mamas for a year now and it has been a rewarding and fun adventure. As a Doula I am enjoying the challenges and joys of supporting the next generation to arrive safely.
I have travelled extensively and enjoy the thrill of encountering new people and places.
In my day job I am a counsellor and play therapist, and I very much enjoy my work with children, teens, families and people with disabilities.
Ali Reimer
I am the newest member of Earthy Birthy Mamas!
I volunteered for two years as a volunteer birth companion (birth doula) at the Peter Lougheed Hospital. I then worked as a post partum Doula for three years, before moving to New Zealand, where I attended Midwifery School.
I am happy to be back in Calgary!
I am currently finishing my midwifery education, through the Midwives College of Utah.
I am enjoying attending births again as a Doula and look forward to the adventures that lie ahead.
