Owen's Birth Story

April 16th, 2006

Welcome, Owen.

You're a lucky little boy. When your Mom was carrying you inside her she took such good care of herself, and of you. This helped her be strong when she was giving birth to you, and it made you a healthy baby.

Your Mom and Dad were so excited about having you join their family. They had your room all ready way before you were actually going to arrive. It was easy to see the room was prepared with love and anticipation.

The day before you were born Mom's body started to tell her the time was getting close. She and your Dad went for a long walk with the dog and Mom even had a little nap. Late at night they decided it was time to go to the hospital where you would be born.

It was a busy night-lots of babies being born. Your parents had to wait a long time for a nurse to check on your Mom and all that time she was working hard at getting ready to give birth to you. When the nurse finally checked on your Mom she knew that you would be born soon and so Mom and Dad got to go right in to the birthing room where you would later be born.

Mom's body worked some more at getting ready to give birth to you and Dad was there all the time talking with her, massaging her and helping her feel strong and ready. There was a really nice nurse, Janeece, who had helped a lot of baby's be born and she helped you get here too. My name is Sheri and I'm a doula (that's someone who helps Mommies and Daddies during the birth of their babies). We all worked together to get you safely into the world, but you and your Mom worked the hardest of all. Sometimes Mommies need medicine to help get their babies born, but your Mom did it all on her own. She was very strong and determined to bring you into this world without medicine.

It seemed you were waiting for the sun to rise before you would come out of your Mom's tummy, and shortly after the sun began to shine you arrived-safe and sound. Your Mom held you right away and called you her "little monkey". Dad was right there, with a few tears of joy in his eyes. You didn't have to do another thing-just be born-and already your parents were in love with you and so happy that you had finally arrived.

Dad stayed with you while the nurse got you all cleaned up and wrapped up nice and warm. I stayed with Mom while the doctor did his job to make sure your Mom's body would be strong and healthy again. Your Mom was uncomfortable, but she didn't really mind because she was just so happy that you were here. Dad was busy snuggling you until Mom was ready to give you your first breakfast. You all looked very content and happy to be together.

Dad called all your grandparents and your great-grandparents to say that you had arrived. They were all so happy that you were here-safe and healthy. No one knew your name yet because Mom and Dad wanted to spend a little time alone with you to see what name fit you best. They decided on Owen James. Owen is a strong name, it means 'warrior'. A warrior is someone who needs to be wise and strong.

Whomever you become, Owen, you can be sure your parents love you forever and greeted you with much joy on the day you were born.

May your life be filled with love and laughter,

Sheri
Earthy Birthy Mamas
